Importance of Tajweed in Recitation of Holy Quran

What is Tajweed ?

Tajweed is an Arabic word which means proficiency or doing something well. It is the set of rules governing the way in which the words of Quran should be pronounced during its recitation. It comes from the word 'ja-wa-da' that means to make well, make better or improve. There are 28 alphabets in Arabic language that reads from right to left . Each alphabet have different style of pronunciation.


Importance of Tajweed

The Holy Quran is the word of Allah Almighty. Listening of recitation of Quran can even soften the heart of a hardest heart person, it makes you to feel as the voice is passing through your soul even if you are not understanding it. Every Muslim has to recite the Quran during prayers (Namaz). Many of us do not realise that reciting the Quran correctly, observing the rules of recitation. Its recitation must be taken very seriously. It is an obligation upon each and everyone of  us to consider the importance of tajweed in recitation of Holy Quran.


Quran must be read, written and recite correctly in order to avoid any type of mistake or misunderstanding.

In Quran Allah says
And recite the Quran with measured recitation  (Quran 73;4)
                                                                                   

Quran was revealed with Tajweed rules applied to it. The angel Jibreel (AS) recited the words of Allah in a certain way and showed the Prophet  Muhammad (PBUH) the ways in which it was permissible to recite the Holy Quran.

Holy Quran is in Arabic Language, when It was revealed there was no need for the people of Arab to study tajweed because they talked with what is now known as Tajweed so it was natural for them. However Non-Arab did not know about tajweed, so in order to avoid the mistakes Scholars had to record the rules.
 The knowledge of Tajweed is important in avoiding two types of mistakes

  1. Clear mistake such as changing one letter to another, not observing elongations (Madd) or starting or stopping from incorrect places. All of these mistakes can change the meanings.
  2. Hidden mistakes are only known by those who studied tajweed rules and are expert in this field. 
Every Muslim should learn the basic rules of Tajweed to avoiding all these mistakes and to recite the Quran melodiously , for this you must find a teacher who can listen you and correct your mistakes.
